SSME structural computer program development. Volume 2: BOPACE users manual - Vos, R. G
A computer program for use with a thermal-elastic-plastic-creep structural analyzer is presented. The following functions of the computer program are discussed: (1) analysis of very high temperature and large plastic-creep effects, (2) treatment of cyclic thermal and mechanical loads, (3) development of constitutive theory which closely follows actual behavior under variable temperature conditions, (4) stable numerical solution approach which avoids cumulative errors, and (5) capability of handl...

Exploration of Advanced Probabilistic and Stochastic Design Methods - Mavris, Dimitri N
The primary objective of the three year research effort was to explore advanced, non-deterministic aerospace system design methods that may have relevance to designers and analysts. The research pursued emerging areas in design methodology and leverage current fundamental research in the area of design decision-making, probabilistic modeling, and optimization. The specific focus of the three year investigation was oriented toward methods to identify and analyze emerging aircraft technologies in ...

Free-jet acoustic investigation of high-radius-ratio coannular plug nozzles - Knott, P. R.
The experimental and analytical results of a scale model simulated flight acoustic exploratory investigation of high radius ratio coannular plug nozzles with inverted velocity and temperature profiles are summarized. Six coannular plug nozzle configurations and a baseline convergent conical nozzle were tested for simulated flight acoustic evaluation. The nozzles were tested over a range of test conditions that are typical of a Variable Cycle Engine for application to advanced high speed aircraft...

ROSAT Observations of a New X-ray Transient in the Small Magellanic Cloud - Clark, George W.
We describe ROSAT observations of a new X-ray transient and its probable optical companion in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The transient, designated RX J0117.6-7330, appeared at a position approximately 5 min southeast of the X-ray pulsar, SMC X-1, in 1992 October 1-2 PSPC observations centered on the pulsar. It was detected again in a similar observation 246 days later at a counting rate diminished by a factor of 270, which corresponds to an average epsilon-folding decay time of 44 days...

Investigation on the electrocatalysis for oxygen reduction reaction by Pt and binary Pt alloys: An XRD, XAS and electrochemical study - Srinivasan, Supramaniam
Electrocatalysis for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on five binary Pt alloy electrocatalysts (PtCr/C, PtMn/C, PtFe/C, PtCo/C and PtNi/C) supported on carbon have been investigated. The electrochemical characteristics for ORR in a proton conducting fuel cell environment has been correlated with the electronic and structural parameters determined under in situ conditions using XANES and EXAFS technique respectively...

Heat and Momentum Transfer Studies in High Reynolds Number Wavy Films at Normal and Reduced Gravity Conditions - Balakotaiah, V., et al
We examined the effect of the gas flow on the liquid film when the gas flows in the countercurrent direction in a vertical pipe at normal gravity conditions. The most dramatic effect of the simultaneous flow of gas and liquid in pipes is the greatly increased transport rates of heat, mass, and momentum. In practical situations this enhancement can be a benefit or it can result in serious operational problems...
